What Is a Magic Circle?

A magic circle (also called a magic loop or adjustable ring) is a technique used to start crochet projects that work in the round, like amigurumi, hats, and granny squares. Instead of chaining and joining with a slip stitch, which can leave a visible hole at the center, the magic circle lets you cinch that starting hole closed completely once your first round of stitches is done.

How to make one

1. Make a loop with your yarn, leaving the tail crossing behind the working yarn.
2. Insert your hook into the loop, yarn over, and pull up a loop.

4. Work your first round of stitches directly into the loop, crocheting over both strands.
5. Once your first round is complete, pull the tail firmly to close the circle.
6. Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch if your pattern calls for it.
