How to Fix a Dropped Stitch or Miscount Mid-Row

Every crocheter drops a stitch or loses count sometimes, even after years of practice. The good news is these mistakes are almost always fixable without ripping out your whole project.

Spotting the Problem

If your stitch count looks off, stop and count carefully, stitch by stitch, rather than glancing at the row. A dropped stitch often shows up as a small gap or a loop hanging loose a few rows down.

Fixing a Dropped Stitch

• Locate the dropped loop and pull it gently with your hook.
• Chain up through each row above it, pulling the loop through one rung at a time, like a ladder.
• Once it reaches your working row, secure it into your next stitch.

Fixing a Miscount

• If you have extra stitches, look for an accidental double stitch or a spot where you worked into the same space twice.
• If you're short, check the beginning and end of the row for skipped stitches.
• Use stitch markers every 10-20 stitches on wide rows to catch mistakes early.

When to Rip Back

If the mistake is more than a few rows down or you can't tell what went wrong, it's okay to unravel back to a clean point. Patience now saves frustration later.
