Understanding the Twisted Chain Problem

When you're working your first row into a foundation chain, it's easy to accidentally twist the chain before you begin. This creates a spiral effect that throws off your entire project from the start.

How to Identify a Twist

Lay your foundation chain flat on a table. The chain should lie completely flat with all the V-shapes facing up. If you see the chain forming a figure-eight or spiral, it's twisted.

Prevention Tips

• Keep your foundation chain flat on your lap or table as you work
• Count your stitches before starting row 1
• Place a stitch marker at both ends to help you see the orientation
• Work slowly and check alignment before joining rounds

The Fix

If you catch the twist early, simply untwist the chain before working into it. For joined rounds (like hats or amigurumi), make absolutely sure the chain is flat before slip stitching the ends together. If you've already worked several rows, unfortunately the best solution is to frog (unravel) back to the foundation chain and start fresh. It's frustrating, but much better than having a twisted project!
