How to Join a New Ball of Yarn Without a Visible Knot

Why Avoid Knots?

Knots can work loose over time, poke through your fabric, or create a bump you can feel and see. Luckily, there are beginner-friendly ways to switch to a new ball of yarn without one.

Method 1: The Spit Splice (Wool Only)

If both yarns are 100% wool or another animal fiber, you can felt the ends together. Untwist about 2 inches of each yarn end, overlap them, wet them slightly, and rub briskly between your palms until they felt into one strand. Let dry a moment before continuing to crochet.

Method 2: Join at the Start of a Stitch

Work until you have a few inches of the old yarn left. Instead of finishing the stitch, drop the old yarn and pick up the new one to complete the last pull-through. This naturally hides the join inside a stitch.

Method 3: Weave in as You Go

Lay both yarn tails along the back of your work and crochet over them for a few stitches before trimming. This secures the ends without any knot at all.

Always join yarn at the edge of a row or panel when possible. It's much easier to hide loose ends in a seam than in the middle of your fabric.
