How to Double Crochet

Double crochet (dc) is a taller stitch than single crochet, and it works up fast, making it a favourite for blankets, scarves, and garments. If you already know single crochet, you're in a great position to learn this next.

What you'll need: medium-weight yarn and a crochet hook (5.0mm/H-8 works well).

Steps:

1. Make a foundation chain, plus two extra chains for turning.
2. Yarn over once before inserting your hook into the fourth chain from the hook.
3. Insert your hook, yarn over, and pull through, giving you three loops on your hook.
4. Yarn over and pull through the first two loops only.
5. Yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops. That's one double crochet!
6. Chain two to turn at the end of each row, and this counts as your first stitch on the next row.
