When you're just starting out, the best hook isn't about brand or price, it's about comfort and visibility. A medium-sized hook, somewhere between 4.0mm and 5.5mm (US G to I), is ideal for learning basic stitches like chain, single crochet, and double crochet. This range works well with widely available worsted-weight yarn, which is easier to handle than very thin or very fuzzy yarns.

For the hook itself, look for one with a slightly flattened or ergonomic handle. This gives you better grip control while you're still building muscle memory. Inline hooks, with a straighter, more pointed head, tend to give more consistent stitches for new crocheters, though tapered hooks work fine too. It's mostly personal preference once you've tried both.

Material matters less than you'd think. Aluminum hooks are smooth, affordable, and glide well through yarn, making them a solid default choice. Wooden hooks add a bit of grip, which some beginners prefer since the yarn is less likely to slip off.
